Also known as “talking therapy”, psychotherapy attempts to change a person’s behaviour, or improve their mood, happiness or general wellbeing primarily through personal interaction. There are very many different psychotherapeutic methods and techniques but the commonly known ones are psychoanalysis, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR).
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is grounded in the dynamic between the patient and therapist. It based in the idea that a person’s moods, behaviour and relationships are formed from repeated patterns developed early in life. Therapeutic sessions are used to explore these patterns and through insight, understanding and the therapeutic relationship itself.
I’m biased, I think therapy is like a food group and is good idea for most people. However, psychotherapy has been used to treat everything from dysthymia and the human condition to bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia. How effective it may be for you is a complex question and is best answered after an assessment.
